Episode 43: Sonic Youth’s “Goo” (1990)

Goo by Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth’s 1990 album “Goo”  is a seminal work in alternative rock, blending noise, punk, and pop elements into a distinctive sonic landscape. The album showcases the band’s experimental spirit and knack for crafting catchy melodies with dissonant guitars and unconventional song structures. Tracks like “Kool Thing” and “Dirty Boots” are standout examples of Sonic Youth’s ability to juxtapose raw energy with introspective lyricism, solidifying “Goo” as a landmark release in the band’s prolific career and a cornerstone of the ’90s alternative music scene.

  1. Hi Love the Podcast! I’ve really enjoyed the Disintegration, Loveless and Nevermind episodes! Would you ever consider doing a Dinosaur Jr album? Possibly You’re living all over me? Green Mind? Keep up the great work!

  2. A minor observation but funny to me about this episode. At the beginning when you are still talking about SY in general and the leadup to the making of this album – you really sound like squares, as if your musical taste/sensibility are so put off that you should be reviewing a Bon Jovi album instead. This kind of music had existed well before Goo (including the landmark Daydeam Nation and Sister SY albums). SY just helped to popularize it.
Scot is right to comment that when grunge exploded, it became cool for one to name-drop SY even though one probably did not listen to them.
